BLINDNESS
"You say, 'I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!' and you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked."
Revelation 3:17 (NLT)
The Laodiceans would describe themselves as self-sufficient because of their wealth, but Christ condemns this attitude. He calls them poor and blind and naked (v. 17).
Secondly, Jesus describes the Laodiceans as blind. Many scholars believe there was a famous remedy for deficient eyesight in nearby Phrygia, and Laodiceans would have sold it. Once again, Jesus is taking a unique strength and commanding them to rely on Christ instead of their resources.
Then Jesus told him, “I entered this world to render judgment—to give sight to the blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind.”
John 9:39 (NLT)
Only Christ can give spiritual sight. But often, we rely only on what we see around us. How much more could we know if we had Christ’s eyes? How would our actions change if we could see the world as Jesus does?
APPLICATION: Consider an area of your life that needs more of Jesus' spiritual vision. Take a moment to seek clarity from Him.
PRAYER:
God,
Give me the eyes of Your Son Jesus. As Jesus told the Laodiceans and as He taught in John, give me the sight that only He can provide. I pray we see people, circumstances and our culture through Your spiritual lens.
